ALS
Stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It's a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. As these cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement die with them. Patients become paralyzed, but their minds remain sharp and alert.
2-5 Years
The average life expectancy of an ALS patient after diagnosis. However, with major recent advances in research, technology, and medical care, many of those affected can survive 10 or more years.
